Introduction to Oracle EBS – (Oracle e Business Suite)

Oracle (EBS) e Business Suite is one of the renowned ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) Applications in the world. It covers a variety of applications which have strong integrations through which data  flows  across application of e Business  Suite.

Oracle has combined different products families and named it Oracle e business Suite. Every Product family has set of modules that complement each other to get most benefit of integrated software. Diagram below shows major product families.

Oracle Accounting System 1987-1997

This was first product of Oracle, when it came into business applications. At that time, this application had only General Ledger functionality that’s why it also became famous with the name of Oracle Financials.It was launched in 1987 and prevailed in the market with this name till 1997 till Oracle launched its Release 11 with name of e Business Suite.

Version 11i  (1998-2006)

Oracle started e Business Suite with 11i.  Its first version was 11.5.0 and last version was Its last version remained quite consistent and was able to build a good customer pool.  Oracle has stopped the support for Oracle EBS version 11i but still i have seen few customers are on 11i and are still planning to move to R12.

Version 12  (2007-Present)

This was a breakthrough from Oracle. Lots of new concepts in business applications especially (Oracle Financials Modules) were introduced along with updated stack of technology .  Around 30 to 40 percent application was changed from Oracle Forms to HTML based pages. EBS Release 12 was introduced in Jan 2007 with version Number R12.0.0, Later R12.1.x versions were introduced and currently R12.2.x series is available to download.

What’s Next

Oracle did not stop at R12. It kept its pace and has taken an extra step to bring a state of the art product called Oracle Fusion. In Oracle Fusion they have introduced an entirely new look and feel. It has also revised the technology stack using ADF (Application Development Framework).  At some point in future Oracle will migrate customers from E-Business Suite to Fusion Applications.
