Step by Step Work Flow Builder Guides and Videos – WISTU

This is my first WISTU post for Oracle Workflow Builder. To know what is WISTU either watch this video or read this article. This post will be helpful for beginners and professional. It will serve a reference for all relevant information available on this subject.

How to use this Article

In this article, i have suggested best available resources for workflow, referred blogs and have placed white paper and oracle books. To be honest, Contents in this article are not mine, I have just researched and compiled all in one place for sharing purpose. I have categorized this article in following sections.

Presentations and White Papers

Oralce Workflow builder (OWB) is a graphical development tool using which we can create, view or modify a business process with simple drag and drop operations. the workflow engine embedded in the oracle database implements process definitions at run time. It is very important to know and get awareness with OWB terminologies. Following documents contains very good explanation of basic terms used in Workflow along with advanced concepts. Most of these books/ presentations have been taken from www.club-oracle.com.

Oracle Workflow Terminologies: This document is developed by Chinmay Sarkar. It contains very simple explanation of workflow components and basic terminologies. Oracle Provided Books of Workflow

Work Flow Developers Guide: This is Oracle guide for developers. It is comprehensive and detailed. Its 2nd and 3rd chapter contains information about how to create a workflow process and how to add different components in it. Normally,  oracle books there are lengthy and much detailed which some times scares the beginner, In such case small presentation as mentioned above seems very helpful to build the initial level basic concepts but for detailed knowledge, definitely oracle books are best. Workflow Advanced Guide This is another guide of oracle. This guide is mainly for those who are aware of Oracle Workflow and have basic knowledge or working in Oracle workflow builder. First Step by Step Tutorial for Beginners 

When i my self was studying the workflow, i came across many blogs that have provided step by step guides but Mr. Anil has done superb job by creating a video tutorial. This tutorial is really amazing and complete implementation of one simple business requirement. The other amazing thing is that all solution files are also available along with sample piece of code that is needed to implement the solution. I found another very good step by step article. That is also recommended for beginners. This article is written by Prudhvi. It contains Steps to create Sample workflow for inventory module. Good explantion and step by step screen shots are available. Going through this you will get a very good idea about how to create a workflow from scratch. He has explained the concepts by taking a business requirement and implementing the solution for it. Recommended for beginners. If you thoroughly go this this article, you can get a good idea sufficient enough to move forward. Read Article.

Create Lookup and apply validation in Workflow

In this lesson, author has explained the process to create lookups and create drop down feature in workflow notification to user. Further he has shown how to make a user enter rejection reason in free text response field within notification and Validate that the value of rejection reason is not null, if user selects rejected. Effectivley this will train you on how to do validations on notification responses using pl/sql. Read Article

Example to Create a Function in Workflow

In this article, author has created a table to track the progress of workflow by creating a Workflow Function to pass parameters to indicate progress and insert the value in table through pl/sql function. Simple and very genuine requirement explained is a simplest way that a person with initial level expertise can easily grasp the concept. Video Tutorials on YouTube

This video is provided by SM Consultants. They have first explained the concept in Oracle Workflow and then have shows a very basic workflow example. Its nice attempt and good materials for starters.

There is another series of 11 video tutorials developed by MR. Seshan. These are helpful for beginners as well as experienced professionals although there is no audio in these tutorials but author has tried to write comments in the notepad wherever he though it important to share something.

I suggest for beginners to listen step by step video tutorial of Anil Passi first and then go through these. Because Mr Anil has recorded audio as well which gives very clear understanding of concept. List of vido tutorials on youtube are as follows
